Mahjong is a flexible game and newways of looking at it are
constantly being shared, adapted and rejected by players across
the world. In previous articles we have shown that the rule sets
of mahjong differ from country to country. Today we discuss the
differences in the tilesused toplay thegame.
Over theyearsmaterialscommonlyused tomakemahjong tiles
include celluloid, Bakelite, wood and (very rarely) ivory. The basic
symbols on these tiles are dots, characters and bamboo and these
feature on all sets around the world. But other distinctive designs
used in various countries can help you identify where a particular
setoriginates.
Flower tiles identify mahjong sets from the birthplace of the
game, China, and they describe two sets of four tiles. The first set
of flower tiles are floral designs representing four flowers – plum,
orchid, chrysanthemumandbamboo–and the second setof flower
tiles represent the four seasons (they are still known as flower tiles
even though seasons have very little todowithflowers!) Singapore
Mahjongaddsa further fouranimal tiles.Theseanimalscome inpairs
(for aesthetic reasons only) and the exact animals vary from set to
set, but examples include ‘cat andmouse’ and ‘rooster andworm’).
VietnameseMahjong also includes eight jokers – four red character
jokersand fourbluecharacter jokers.
麻将的玩法千变万化，新的玩法常
常被分享、采纳，或不为玩家所接受。
在以往的麻将文章中，我们提过不同的
麻将规则，今日则转谈使用的麻将牌的
不同。
各地的麻将规则有异，以致在用具
上也有所不同。现在麻将牌的质地包括
明胶、电木、纯木和象牙（极为罕见）。
纵使各地的麻将都有筒子、索子和万子
牌，但细心一看就可以发现各地麻将在
同一类牌中，其图案设计都有不同。
在麻将的起源地中国，麻将牌包
含花牌。花牌分两种，每种四张，分
别记有四种花 (梅、兰、菊、竹) 和四
季 (第二种也叫花牌，尽管四季跟花基
本扯不上关系)。而新加坡麻将还另外
加上四张以动物为主题的“花牌”。
那些动物都是成双成对（完全出于审美
原因），而所刻的动物每一副牌都会不
同，其中的例子有猫与鼠、鸡与虫。越
南麻将还包含四张蓝、四张红，共八张
的百搭牌。
