Millions is not only the biggest poker
tournament held in Australia every
year, it is the biggest in the Asia-Pacific

TheCrownpoker roomopened in June1997,
whichmakesitsmeteoricrisetooneofthemost

impressive. In July 1998 the first Australasian
PokerChampionshipwasheldwithanAU$1,000
buy in and just 74 starters. The tournament
moved to January in2001, andhasbeenheld
theneversince. Itwasre-brandedasthe“Aussie
Millions” in2003 and thiswas the year it truly
became recognized as amajor event on the
internationalpoker tour.
TheAussieMillions is a tournament very
close tomyheartas Ifinished third in2001and
tenth in 2005. Outside of theWorld Series of
Poker,theAussieMillionsisthepokertournament
allAustralianpokerplayerswoulddearly loveto
win.After itofficiallybecametheAussieMillions
in2003 it hadbeenabadhuntingground for
Australiansanditwasn’tuntil2009thattheAussie
Millionscrowned itsfirsteverAussieChampion,
StewartScott.Since then thingshave improved
for the localswith the last three champions all
beinghomegrownsuccessstories.
The tournament became increasingly
popular with the European players through
the2000sas theyescaped theharshEuropean
winter for the shining sun of Australia in
January. When Full Tilt Poker sponsored the
tournament in themid 2000s it started the
Americanmigration down south. Since then
thetournamenthasgrowntoover700starters
andatabuy-inofAU$10,000itmakestheAussie
Millionsoneof thebiggestpoker tournaments
held anywhere in theworld. The tournament
hasalsoenjoyedworldwidetelevisioncoverage,
whichhas further enhanced its international
appeal. The tournament hit anewhighwhen
poker superstar Gus Hansen, nicknamed the
“GreatDane”, lifted the trophy in2007.
TheAussieMillions continues tomove from strength to
strength. It isaworldclasstournamentrunbyaworldclass
