Inexperiencedpoker players sometimes get scaredwhen thegame turns crazy.Markmywords,
acrazygame isexactlywhatyouwant. Justmodifyyourgame tominimizepotential trainwrecks.
I haveoften listened topokerplayers tellme
they would prefer to play against good players
insteadof bad. If someone tells you this youwill
instantlyknowtheyhaveno ideaaboutpoker. Isn’t
thereasonweplaypokertowinmoney?You
always
wanttoplayagainst loose,aggressive,badplayers.
Theyaretheeasiesttotakemoneyoff,and it’smuch
easier relieving a wild player of his purse than
someonewhokeepshischips tightlyguarded.
Sowhy is it that some players fear a crazy
game?Thereason isvariance.Whenplaybecomes
wild and loose, players tend to play every hand,
there is a lot of bluffing, and thepot grows. With
bigpotscontestedby lotsofplayers, the risksare
higher. Just remember the rewards should far
outweigh these risks.You justneedabankrollbig
enough to takea fewhits if thingsgowrong.
There are some changes you will need to
make ifyourun intoagamethat isgoingcrazy.The
first thing to remember is toplay fewerhands. On
the surface this seems tobe thewrong strategy,
as you can’t win hands when you are not in the
pot. But trustme, tightenup, beselective, andbe
patient! This is going tobe frustratingwhen you
can’tgetdealt ahand, youcan’thit any flopsand
you’rewatchingmaniacs call off their stacks. It is,
however, far less frustratingthanmakingyourway
to thecashmachine toget anotherbuy-in.
It istruethatsomepokerexpertssaythebest
response to a loose crazy game is to loosen up
yourself,butnotquiteasmuchasthemaniacs.This
advicemaywellbe true forchampionplayers,but
most people reading this articlewill not fall into
that category. Taking the loose approachmeans
youwillbeplayingmanymorehands,andtussling
muchmoreoften,withplayerswhosehole cards
willoftenbeacompletemysterytoyou! Itcanget
you intoall sortsof trouble.
When there aremore players seeing flops,
you aregenerally going toneedbetter hands to
win. Top pairs and over pairs can be vulnerable
in these situations. Prior to the flop you can be
more aggressive in an attempt to reduce the
number of players seeing the flop. You might,
for example, findyourself threebetting inplaces
wherenormallyyouwouldn’t.
If the game is crazy youwill find value, so
there isn’t the same emphasis on hiding huge
hands. Post flop with a big hand (but not a
monster) you might want to use your skill to
keep the pot small if you are convinced you
won’t be able to push drawing players out of
the hand. If there is no fold equity in betting,
what’s the point of it? Since themaniacswon’t
fold you are going to have to fade their outs
anyway, and you’re just building a bigger pot
for them to chase.
The good thing is youwon’t need to show
any incredibletricksorpokerskills inacrazygame.
In fact, Iwouldurgeyou tobeas conservativeas
you can. If you try toget fancy youwill only find
yourself introuble.Thebighandsshould lookafter
themselvesand,as I saidbefore,allyouhavetodo
isbepatient, andwait tobe rewarded.
The last thing to remember is that you are
goingto losesomebigpots inthistypeofgame. In
fact youwill have theoddnightwhere it appears
all themoney is flying to themaniacs. Just deal
with this. In the long run the variance in crazy
gameswill beyour friend, not your enemy.
