Visitors have the option of either hiking by foot or taking a cable car to reach the complex which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Center of Macao. Inside the fortress stands Guia Chapel, originally established by Clarist nuns, who resided at the site before establishing the Convent of St Clair. Guia Lighthouse is the first modern lighthouse on the Chinese coast and has a light visible for 20 miles in clear weather conditions. A comprehensive collection of exhibits is displayed at the Historical Museum of Coloane and Taipa, including historical relics unearthed in Coloane, the stone architectural remains of the former Island Council Building and artefacts representing the villages, religions and culture of old Coloane and Taipa. The exhibition rooms on the second floor have different themes, including the history of the former Municipal Council of the Islands, a look back at agriculture and handicrafts of the old days and architectural features of historic buildings. It provides visitors with a better understanding of the modern political and economic development of Coloane and Taipa. Founded in 1587 by three Spanish Dominican priests from Acapulco in Mexico, this church is also connected to the Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary. Besides the unique and traditional church, what used to be the bell tower has been transformed into a small Museum of Sacred Art, now exhibiting a collection of around 300 artifacts.
