Big Jim’s weekend preview

Written by James Potter

Arguably the Asia Pacific’s best horse race is on this weekend. The Spring Racing Carnival now moves to Mooney Valley in Melbourne for the running of the Cox Plate. This time-honored race features the best of the best under fair conditions in a race that crowns champions. Winning a Cox Plate gives you instant racing immortality. The race is set weight for age which means horses are weighted by their age and sex. This is obviously much fairer than a handicap race which is designed to make the racing closer. I have never been a fan of trainer Gai Waterhouse but I really love her chances this weekend on Fiorente as I think the horse is perfectly suited to this race and is super each way value at around 5/1.

The start of the new NBA season is just days away and those who love the US sports are in for one hell of a weekend. The Major League Baseball World Series is approaching crunch time and it’s another huge weekend of NFL and college football. My NFL bets at the line are as follows – the Browns, Dolphins, Lions, Raiders, Falcons, Vikings and Rams.

The Rugby League World Cup in England also starts this week and there appears to be more interest this time around with three teams in with a genuine chance of winning – England, Australia and New Zealand. There is also plenty of golf, tennis, football and motor sport so buckle up for another huge weekend of sport.

Good luck and good punting,
