Big Jim’s weekend wrap

Written by James Potter

We’ve just witnessed a huge weekend of motor sports throughout the Asia-Pacific region including Formula 1, Moto GP and Bathurst for lovers of the V8s. I don’t even know who won Bathurst (ed – Ford’s Mark Winterbottom claimed his maiden win) as I am more interested in watching beautiful girls doused in champagne than bogans drowned in VB. Anyway, Sebastian Vettel was too good again in the Formula 1 and put some coin in the bank for us but Jorge Lorenzo couldn’t hold out the Repsol Honda’s even though he took the lead early.

In the world of football it was another weekend of internationals. Australia has dumped their coach Holger Osieck after consecutive 6-0 thrashings to Brazil and France and hopefully the boys from Down Under find a coach more interested in scoring goals than defensive midfield battles. Bring back Guus Hiddink!

We are down to four in the baseball and the cream has certainly risen to the top. Oakland, Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay all fell short and we are left with the LA Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers and St Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals and Tigers are off to flyers and I just wish I could have told you a few days earlier that they both represent the best value in the race to the World Series.

A special mention must go out to an incredible round of American college football. Penn State beat Michigan in front of 107,000 fans in the fourth period of overtime. WOW! What a game that was. Stanford was another undefeated team who bit the dust to a lower rated opponent. “Johnny Football” and the rest of the Texas A&M team served it up to Ole Mississippi Rebels in one hell of a college football comeback. Johnny Manzini was simply awesome playing on one leg and we can only wait and see if “Mr Football” college star can become “Mr Football” NFL star in the future. There are those who think he can’t, but if he keeps improving we will at the very least get to see what he can do.

There was some great horse racing and some awesome NFL action and I hope you enjoyed a weekend on the coach full of beer and pizza like I did.
