Manchester City’s untouchable fortress

Written by Leanne Lu

It was another weekend of twists and drama with jaw-dropping results accompanied by spectacular goals. It might be the reason the English Premier League is recognized as the best league in the world!

Tottenham Hotspur’s 6-0 defeat at Manchester City was the biggest surprise of the weekend. The Blue Moons’ record at home this season is nothing short of stunning. Aside from a 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League, they have a 100 percent winning record and in their last four home games have scored 20 goals to highlight their attacking prowess.

But no one would have expected Tottenham to fall to such a huge defeat. Jesús Navas’ opening goal after just 13 seconds demolished Spur’s confidence. Two goals from Navas and Sergio Agüero, together with Alvaro Negredo’s fine strike and Sandro’s own goal, contributed to the humiliating rout.

The Merseyside derby on Saturday was also full of drama. Everton drew 3-3 with Liverpool at Goodison Park with all six goals coming from set pieces. Mirallas and Lukaku cancelled out Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suárez’s goals in the first half, while the Belgian’s second goal of the game almost capped a classic fight-back for the home side. But better later than never as substitute Daniel Sturridge scored in the 89th minute to secure a draw for the visitors. The result could still have gone either way in the four added minutes with both sides creating chances to score the winning goal. Some English media branded this game as the “best Merseyside derby in a generation” and I can’t argue with that.

Manchester United’s visit to Cardiff City ended in disappointing fashion. Kim Bo-Kyung, the Korean substitute, scored in added time to make it 2-2 with Wayne Rooney and Patrice Evra’s goals not enough to bring a fourth successive league win for United.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s form remains strong as they beat dark horse Southampton 2-0 at home to extend their lead at the top of the league to four points. In other games, Chelsea and Swansea grabbed full points on the road, beating struggling West Ham United and Fulham respectively.
