Sydney shines for Star Summer Series

Written by Ben Blaschke

One of the more under-rated poker tournaments in the Asia Pacific region wrapped up earlier this week, with the Star Summer Series at Sydney’s The Star attracting the biggest field in its five year history.

A field of 385 players took their seats this year – well up from the 345 who took part 12 months ago – and included plenty of big names including six-time WSOP bracelet winner Jeff Lisandro, fellow bracelet winner Rory Young, Jonathan Karamalikis, Xuan Liu, Tam Truong, Michael Kanaan, former Aussie Millions champion David Gorr and Daniel Neilson among others.

However, it was local Sydneysider Michael Levy who prevailed, storming home on the final day to claim the AU$173,250 first prize.

The Star has typically been considered a little brother to Melbourne’s Crown when it comes to poker in Australia but with growing numbers and moves afoot to expand its poker offerings it will be interesting to see how the poker power base develops over the next few years.
