The best anniversary gift for The Professor

Written by Leanne Lu

Arsenal looks unstoppable after six games of the new season. They gunned down in-form Swansea last weekend at Liberty Stadium, with Aaron Ramsey – who is in the form of his life – firing home again. With the goals from young Gunner Serge Gnabry and Ramsey, Arsenal beat the Welsh club 2-1 to extend their league winning streak to five games and find themselves sitting at the top of the league with 15 points. A full 17 years ago this week, Arsène Wenger became the Arsenal manager and is now the longest serving Premier League manager following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson at the end of last season. Top of the league is obviously the best gift for The Professor on his 17th anniversary.

The two big clubs from Manchester, on the other hand, suffered crippling losses on the same day last weekend. A miracle comeback from Aston Villa kept Manchester City winless on the road in the new season. El Ahmadi and Bacuna struck to cancel out goals from Yaya Touré and Edin Džeko, while Weimann scored the winning goal for the Villains. It was a classic EPL lesson for Manuel Pellegrini as he gradually understands that small clubs from England are by no means easier to conquer than big continental opponents. But the man in much deeper crisis is his local rival, David Moyes, as Manchester United lost 1-2 to West Brom at home. Seven points from six games dropped the reigning champions to 12th place on the league table.

Another important match was Liverpool’s trip to Sunderland. The Black Cats restored some confidence after the sacking of Paul Di Canio last week, putting in a great effort against the Reds by firing 23 shots on goal – the most from them this season. But the attacking lines of the two teams proved the difference with Luis Suárez making his league comeback after a 10-game ban in partnership with the in-form Daniel Sturridge. The English striker scored the first goal before producing two assists for Suárez to make it 3-1. Liverpool now sits in second just two points behind Arsenal.

Tottenham Hotspur drew 1-1 against Chelsea at White Hart Lane, a result that would leave both managers reasonably pleased.
