Kites soar high at Galaxy Macau

Written by Ben Blaschke

Galaxy Macau is warming up for next month’s Asian premiere of highly anticipated film The Last Race with the launch of a unique exhibition of Chinese and antique kites.

The “Flying High” exhibition, which includes a total of 60 kites at The Promenade shops, will run from now until 25 June and aims to showcase China’s rich history of craftsmanship and artistry.

They include The Phoenix embroiled within a dragon’s tail at the Pearl Lobby, the Bright Future collection of eagle kites at the Jade Lobby and East Square and the Chinese Dragon kite, winner of the Weifang International Kite Festival’s award for most innovative giant kite.

The kites, some of which are four decades old, come from Weifang of Shangdong, famed for its traditional handicrafts and renowned as the world capital of kites.

They are all part of the build-up to The Last Race premiere on 11 June at Galaxy UA Cinemas. An unofficial sequel to the Academy Award winning film Chariots of Fire, The Last Race tells the story of Olympic running champion Eric Liddell who was imprisoned in a Japanese internment camp in China during World War II. Brought together by a common enemy and the desperate conditions of war, Chinese villagers helped Liddell and a group of prisoners escape from the camp under the cover of giant kites.
