The 21st running of the Macau Poker Cup heads into Day 2 today with 221 players returning to the PokerStars LIVE Macau room at City of Dreams with aspirations of lifting the coveted Red Dragon trophy.
However the big talking point was the huge field of 447 players who took to the felt on Day 1c – making amends for a slow first two flights when 213 and 148 took part respectively. The big third flight brought the total number of entries to 808 – considerably fewer than the record 995 who played at MPC20 at the start of the year but far more than the 645 who took part in the corresponding MPC 12 months ago.
The remaining players will be fighting it out for a HK$1,667,000 first prize and there are plenty of recognizable faces among them – including World Gaming CEO Andrew W Scott who sits 23rd in chips with 100,100. Not far behind is Winfred Yu with 94,000, while Celina Lin and Raymond Wu are also still in contention.
But the man to catch is Norway’s Mikal Blomlie with 169,500. The cash game specialist won a huge pot late in the day holding pocket Qs and will be looking to add a deep tournament run to his resume.
