Well, it was Australia’s day at the US Masters today as Adam Scott won his first major and the famous green jacket following a thrilling final round. The softly spoken Aussie is the first person from the Asia Pacific region to win this prestigious event after prevailing in a playoff against 2009 champion Angel Cabrera. My tip for the tournament, Tiger Woods, received a two shot penalty which pretty much put him out of contention, but he still managed a top five finish. We had Adam Scott as a great bet for a top 10 finish so I am happy that our two best selections finished in the top four.
Wigan will take on Manchester City in the FA Cup final after both won their semi-finals over the weekend. Wigan’s 2-0 win at Millwall was marred by some horrible violence in the stands. This is what Millwall is famous for but in the future authorities must find a way to keep this at least out of the stadium. With Chelsea losing to City at home I had a forgettable weekend in the football tipping so it might be best to simply pretend none of this ever happened!
In other football codes there was some quality action to soak up in the AFL, NRL and the Super 15. Hawthorn was brutal in its demolition of the Magpies and Port Adelaide was inspirational in their derby showdown against Adelaide. The Melbourne Storm reminded South Sydney who the team to beat is in the NRL while last season’s losing grand finalists Canterbury will be starting to wonder if they will even make the finals in 2013 after their horror start to the season. They have won just one of six after the 38-0 thrashing they copped against Sonny Bill Williams and the Sydney Roosters. The Queensland Reds’ victory over the Chiefs has put them on the heels of the Brumbies and for the first time ever there appear to be two Australian teams in with a real chance at the Super 15 title this year.
There was also plenty of motor sport and NBA to keep us entertained in what was another amazing weekend of sport. The Lakers beating the Spurs to all but secure a playoff spot with no Kobe Bryant was a highlight. Outside of the Masters it was a bad weekend on the punt for Big Jim but I will hit the ground running again next week.
Good luck and good punting.
