Well I hope you all read my tips for the Caulfield Cup in my Spring Racing preview last week. Fawkner came thundering down the outside to salute in impressive style. He started the race at 9/1 but you could have found as much as 12/1 earlier in the week. I backed him each way but I must admit I didn’t take the 30/1 that was on offer for Fawkner in the Melbourne Cup. Alas, that ship has now sailed.
We are finally down to two in the chase for the baseball World Series. The Red Sox and the Cardinals are two awesome franchises and it should be a close match-up. I lean towards the Cardinals but with no real conviction.
In other US sports, the Seahawks got us off to a great start when they blew away the Arizona Cardinals on the road in the NFL. Seattle still has a few big names to come back into the team and they will be very hard to beat if they can teach their gun new quarterback Russell Wilson not to turn the ball over near his own line. Special mention also should go out to Tony Romo who had another great day at the office to get the Cowboys home on the road against arch rivals the Eagles. Romo still has to prove himself late in the season but he is putting up a career best year so far.
The dead rubber Bledisloe Cup game between the All Blacks and Wallabies in Dunedin was a fantastic game of open rugby. The referee, in true rugby tradition, tried his best to stifle the game but there were still plenty of great tries and exceptional play. Those who took the big start on the Wallabies collected but the All Blacks were never going to lose the game. The wash up is that the All Blacks are an unstoppable force in the world of rugby but there is a glimmer of hope there for the Wallabies.
