Crucial moments in Reds’ title bid

Written by Leanne Lu

Twenty-four years ago Brendan Rodgers, Liverpool’s current manager, was still an apprentice at Reading. Since then, as he developed from an ambitious young player to one of the most sought after managers in Europe, he has seen a number of EPL championship sides come and go yet never did he witness Liverpool climbing back to the top of English football. Yet it looks like their barren run is about to come to an end with the Reds now striding towards their first ever Premier League title after beating Norwich City 3-2 at Carrow Road.

The relegation-threatened Canaries put up the fight of their lives, and twice they scored to give themselves a chance thanks to the nervy defending of a club all too aware of how close they are to glory. Liverpool’s problem defending high balls was exposed ruthlessly in the game against West Ham United not long ago and this time Rodgers was forced to retreat an attacking mid-fielder in Joe Allen and replace him with a third centre back in Daniel Agger to protect their 3-2 lead. Luckily, Norwich fell short of leveling the score with their Premier League survival in great danger given they face Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal in the last month.

If Liverpool do win the title, superstars Steven Gerrard and Luis Suárez will certainly be the ones to credit, but we can’t forget young players such as Raheem Sterling, who scored two and created another yesterday and has provided world-class performances week in, week out. This week the Reds welcome Chelsea to Anfield in a game that could ultimately seal the title and given their superb home form this year they will be very hard to stop.

Chelsea’s chances suffered a huge blow on Saturday as they were beaten 2-1 by bottom club Sunderland, just a week after the Black Cats grabbed a point from Manchester City to further aid Liverpool’s title push. David Moyes was in greater pain though, with his return to Goodison Park ending in a 2-0 loss. In 12 games against top six sides this year, United has managed just one win and how he remains in charge of such a famous and successful club is beyond us.
