New movies come to town

Written by Yuci Tai

Over the past few days I have attended consecutive movie premieres at Galaxy Macau and the Venetian Macau, one by talented film directors the Pang Brothers called “Out of Inferno 3D” and the other by American director Dennie Gordon called “My Lucky Star.”

“Out Of Inferno 3D” is Hong Kong’s first 3D disaster movie with production costs estimated to have been around HK$150 million. It is shot in real time and the disaster scenes continue non-stop. The film is a story about firefighters and although there is no surprise with the story line — after experiencing lots of difficulties there is the standard happy ending — the story is tight. The stars — top Hong Kong actors San Lau and Louis Koo — will also ensure it grosses well at the box office. As for the biggest selling point, the 3D effects made me scream twice, but overall I wouldn’t say I felt like I was surrounded by fire.

“My Lucky Star” is a tale about Sophie (played by Zhang Ziyi) and David (played by Wang Leehom). From Sophie’s stomping grounds in Beijing to tropical, high-tech Singapore, they travel to the outback fishing villages of Hong Kong and eventually experience an exciting gondola finale in the canals of The Venetian Macau. The movie includes comic book effects and is a light-hearted romantic comedy featuring one high-paced adventure after another. I love the story which brings out the words “life needs adventure!”

Top Hong Kong actor Sean Lau joined co-stars Louis Koo and Sinje Lee to delight the crowds waiting to see their favorite onscreen heroes.

It is interesting to note how many Hong Kong and international movies and TV shows have been filmed in Macau in recent years. Just last week, Chow Yun-Fat was here filming his latest movie while Eric Tsang will be here next week to shoot a film as well. It’s great to see that the beauty of Macau is becoming more common on the big screen with movie premieres also becoming more frequent. Could Macau be the new home of the superstar?
