The largest Mahjong tournament in the southern hemisphere, the 2016 Mahjong Masters, kicks off at The Star in Sydney this Sunday 10 April.

The three day event will see more than 300 players from around the world converge on to battle it out for their share of AU$100,000 in prize money, with the winner set to take home AU$50,000 in cash.

Among those confirmed to take part in the Mahjong Masters is Soichiro Suzuki, who finished second in the 2016 World Series of Mahjong, and well known Hong Kong celebrity and CEO of Hong Thai Travel, Mr Jackie Wong. Also present will be 2015 Mahjong Masters Grand Master Mei Wong looking to take home another AU$50,000.

Hugh Fraser, General Manager of Gaming Operations at The Star Sydney, said, “Mahjong is such an exciting game to be involved in and to watch so we are delighted to host this massive tournament.

“People of all ages and cultures can enjoy the camaraderie Mahjong brings, it requires a combination of skill, mental toughness and of course at times a little luck.

“We have 72 Mahjong tables and equal sets of Mahjong tiles ready for our players to participate. We can’t wait to see who will take out this year’s title as our Grand Master of the 2016 Mahjong Masters.”
