Australian sport has been rocked by a drugs scandal this year with both the Australian Football League (AFL) and the National Rugby League (NRL) having teams and players under investigation by ASADA for the use of performance enhancing substances in recent seasons.
In the AFL, Essendon is the main club in the thick of it while rugby league has seen Cronulla embroiled in the scandal. Of course, both clubs have denied any wrongdoing and it has been interesting to see how the two sides have handled the distractions in 2013.
The Bombers started the season on fire and have been a top four side for most of the year, but it seems the off-field dramas are finally hitting home. They were thrashed 133-54 by struggling Collingwood at the weekend and it looks like their premiership hopes have come apart at the seams.
On the other hand, Cronulla produced one of their best performances of the year in the NRL to beat the in-form Warriors 18-14 in New Zealand. After struggling early in the year, the Sharks are looking great on the eve of the finals despite all that is going on in regards to the drugs investigations.
In golf, Tigers Woods warmed up for the US PGA with victory in the Bridgestone Invitational. Tiger has now won this event eight times and will be hoping to carry that form over to Oak Hill later this week as he searches for his 15th Major.
The Chiefs won a thriller over the Brumbies in the final of the Super 15. The Brumbies jumped away to an early lead and the match hung in the balance deep into the second half until two quick tries to the home side saw them secure their second consecutive title.
In the tennis, Samantha Stosur won her first WTA title of the year after beating world number two Victoria Azarenka while the World Swimming Championships wrapped up in Barcelona with the USA topping the medal tally ahead of China and France.
Good luck and good punting.
