We went on a self-driving tour through mainland China and one of our destinations was Hunan province. One of our friends has always shied away from spicy foods and was hesitant to try the local dishes. For those who have been to Hunan, you would know it is not easy to find a restaurant that doesn’t cook with chilies. But our friend didn’t want to ruin our foodie adventure so decided to eat with us anyway and, surprisingly, fell in love with the food!
When we got back to Macau, we had Hunan cuisine on our minds and found a newly opened Hunan restaurant called Xiang Chu Restaurant. The menu listed authentic Hunan dishes such as beef “three mix” (beef, tripe and tendon), cumin gristles, Mao braised pork and shark fin with preserved chili that you just can’t miss. The chef and the ingredients are all from Hunan – no wonder its dishes are full of authentic flavor.
