WGM’s Best Weekend Bets: 27 February to 1 March

Written by Ben Blaschke

We start the weekend’s action with the ICC Cricket World Cup where an intriguing clash takes place today between South Africa and the West Indies. Windies opener Chris Gayle smashed the first ever World Cup double century in his side’s win over Zimbabwe earlier this week and if he gets going again he could make life difficult for the South Africans. Their $3.50 odds are also appealing given that although inconsistent, when they are in form they can be brilliant. However, the Windies’ bowling attack has been poor so far and we simply can’t see them making enough inroads into the powerful South African batting line-up.

It’s off to the EPL on Saturday where we love the look of West Ham at around $2.00 at home to Crystal Palace. The Hammers may have gone four games without a win but three of those have been draws against Manchester United, Tottenham and Southampton. Back home against less well-credentialed opposition they look the goods here.

Finally it’s a huge clash on Sunday as Manchester City travel to Anfield to take on a resurgent Liverpool. This was one of the games of the season last year as the Reds stole a thrilling 3-2 win and very nearly the title. They’re in spectacular form again this time around as the only undefeated side in 2015 although what to make of City right now is anyone’s guess. They smashed Newcastle 5-0 last week and Stoke 4-1 the week before but stringing games together hasn’t been a strong point for them of late. We like the Reds with a one goal advantage to at least come away with a draw.
