Recently, there has been a lot of talk about golf’s two biggest names, Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods, and the debate rages on about who is the better golfer. One thing is for certain, the plucky young Irishman’s name evokes none of the fear the great Tiger’s did in the past.
The question which needs to be answered is where is Tiger Woods at in his career. I think we can say he is past his best – but is a Tiger past his best still better than all the rest? Well, he is better than all but one and that man is Rory.
Rory stands apart from European pretenders such as Westwood and Donald, who will never be mentioned in the same breath as Tiger Woods. McIlroy is an out-and-out winner. He is one of those athletes whose mental strength separates him from his competitors.
However, how long will Rory be able to keep at the top of his game? He will have to do it for at least a decade to come close to attaining Tiger’s greatness. Tiger also maintains he has much unfinished business left on the golf courses of the world, so he could easily return to a level of form that makes it impossible for Rory to dominate.
It’s great that golf has another champion other than Tiger Woods. Let us pray these two can go head to head in the final rounds of many majors in the future.
