Justin Timberlake might be a good person – he probably is. His music and acting aren’t my cup of tea, but there are many who appreciate his work. It so happens that Justin is also a very good golfer and loves the game. The golf tournament he organizes, the Shriners Open, raises a lot of money for charity. Still, this doesn’t excuse what he did at the opening ceremony of the Ryder Cup.
Justin stood up in front of the world’s best golfers and read a poem in which he compared golf to sex. I know Americans love pomp and ceremony, but this took things to another level and I had to swallow hard to stop myself from being sick.
In the US, golf is usually spared the flag-waving self-congratulation we have to endure in most of their other sports. Justin’s opening to the Ryder Cup managed to change that in one horrific moment.
I like golf and I like sex but Justin must be seeing something in both activities that I am missing. Couldn’t Mr Timberlake have spoken of his love of golf or his ambitions to raise money for charity? He could have even sang a song rather than torturing everyone with his overdramatic crap. How it got past the organizers’ quality control is beyond me. Shame on you all!
