The Australian cricket team completed a 5-0 thrashing of the West Indies in the One-day International competition. The West Indies were competitive in most of the games and threw away a couple of certain victories. Get on them to win the T20 game against the Aussies on Wednesday. The Australian Cricket Board will say this series justifies their ridiculous selection policy, but they will need come away with reasonable results in India and England before we believe anything of the sort.
Manchester City has all but dropped out of the race for this year’s EPL title. You can’t lose to teams like Southampton when you are trying to chase down Manchester United. The only question now remaining for United is whether they can add the Champions League and the FA Cup to the premiership. Outside of Man City the rest of the weekend’s results were as expected.
In the golf, Brandt Snedeker appears to be a man on a mission. I just wish he could have inspired Dustin Johnson who was horribly disappointing. Snedeker backed up two second positions in consecutive weeks by winning at Pebble Beach. Brandt was just in cruise mode and never looked in trouble in his final round. Golf isn’t like tennis – the best players don’t always win. There are too many variables in golf that make the runs of success we see tennis champions have impossible. The last three weeks suggest that the likable Snedeker from America’s southern heartland is at the top of his game, and will be looking to make an impression in the big tournaments later in the year.
Rafael Nadal has come back from a seven-month injury and made the final of an ATP event in South America. Tennis needs the raging bull fit and competitive, so this is good news for the sport. In the rugby, the Welsh won for just the fourth time in 38 years when they put the French to the sword in the Six Nations Championship in France. The Welsh are now in with a chance as they try and chase down the unbeaten English.
It wasn’t the biggest weekend of sport, but with southern hemisphere football codes and baseball just around the corner there is plenty of sporting action on the horizon.
Good luck and good punting.
