It was a memorable weekend in Australian sport as the biggest event of the year, the AFL Grand Final, took place at the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground. I have been crowing about Hawthorn all year and in the end they proved too strong for Fremantle to lift the trophy. Meanwhile, in the two rugby league semi-finals it was the Manly Sea Eagles and Sydney Roosters recording easy wins to book their spot in this Sunday’s NRL Grand Final. It was a forgettable night for South Sydney on Friday however as they raced to a 14-0 lead over Manly before choking to go down 30-20.
It was the weekend of upsets in the EPL with both Manchester sides suffering disastrous losses. Chelsea could only manage a draw against Spurs as well which means the three pre-season favorites are now languishing mid table. United’s predicament looks particularly worrying with just seven points from six games and they find themselves a massive eight points behind Arsenal who must think all their Christmases have come at once.
The baseball has reached the playoffs, thankfully, and there are plenty of surprises. For starters there is no Yankees, Giants or Nationals which will have the bookies cheering. The huge surprise is the Cleveland Indians who embarked on a 10 game winning streak to sneak into the playoffs. If you are one of those who love a good fairy tale story then get on the Indians because if they keep this run going it could become one of world sport’s great achievements.
