EPL round 10: Champions League fixtures affect domestic performance

Written by Leanne Lu

The mid-week Champions League games undeniably took their toll on the domestic performances of the EPL clubs, and especially on those clubs struggling in the group stage. Chelsea, the reigning European champion, who is now behind in their match-up with Shakhtar Donetsk, had a dreadful game at Liberty Stadium. They managed just 10 shots, of which only five were on target – by no means up to Chelsea’s standard. The draw means the Blues have dropped five points in their last two games. As a result, they have succumbed the league pole position to Manchester United for the first time in the new season.

If Chelsea is having trouble, then Manchester City is looking for a miracle to qualify. In Group D, the Blue Moon is sitting at the wrong end of the table with only one point in hand. Roberto Mancini’s outburst at the journalists gathered for the press conference before their Champions League game against Ajax indicated the first signs of strain. With the crucial Champions League game forefront in their minds, they were held to a scoreless draw by West Ham last weekend.

Manchester United benefits most from the Champions League fixtures as they ease through their group stage. Their comfortable draw means it is not surprising the Red Devils are now sitting at the top of Group H. United inflicted a nightmare upon Arsenal at Old Trafford, with the 2-1 final score hardly reflecting the dominance of the home team. Former Gunner striker Robin Van Persie scored United’s first goal, but he refused to celebrate, earning him applause from some of the away fans.

Coincidentally, the EPL clubs facing Europa League fixtures also had a bad day at the office last weekend. Tottenham Hotspur surprisingly lost to minnow club Wigan, and Liverpool couldn’t register a win against Newcastle United at Anfield, which leaves them mired mid-table. In upcoming matches Tottenham challenges Manchester City and Liverpool takes on Chelsea, so we can expect both clubs to field some fringe players in the Europa League games.
