Good Food Guide: Lai Kei Ice Cream

Written by The Panda

It has been said the Chinese invented ice cream more than 2,000 years ago as a cold drink by mixing ice with juice or rice. Later, Marco Polo brought this cold drink to Italy and other parts of Europe. Back then it was not an easy thing to make ice cream because it not only required ice but the ice had to be kept at a very low temperature. Therefore, the amount of ice cream made each time was limited and only royalty and dignitaries had the chance to enjoy it. Ice cream later became more readily available when modern cooling systems were invented. Nowadays, ice cream has become one of our favorite desserts and people are constantly improving the way to make ice cream but few are making it the traditional way.

The old-style ice cream shop was very popular back in the 60s but is very rare now. Lai Kei Ice Cream in Macau still makes it the traditional way. A very simple coconut or taro flavor ice cream ball is fresh and has no artificial flavor or color. Those who have a big craving can try the one-pound ice cream bar. The red bean ice stick is also unique and worth trying.
