The World Series of Poker Main Event is well underway and after the relative calm of the three Day 1 flights, things are gradually starting to heat up in Las Vegas’ Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino.
A total of 6,683 players contested this year’s event – a rise of 331 players on 2013 and the biggest Main Event field since 2011 – with the cream of the world’s poker crop and a raft of former WSOP Main Event champions among the packed field. This year’s format also sees Day 2 split into two separate fields with the survivors from Days 1a and 1b contesting Day 2a yesterday and the survivors from Day 1c nearing the end of Day 2b as we speak.
Among those safely through to Day 3, when the entire remaining field will combine for the first time, are Antonio Esfandiari, Chris Moneymaker, Allen Cunningham, Erik Seidel, Huck Seed and last year’s winner Ryan Riess.
Today’s Day 2b is nearing its conclusion too with Phil Ivey nursing the biggest stack in the room as he looks to repeat his final table run of 2009. Also looking good to progress is Daniel Negreanu, Barry Greenstein, John Hennigan, NBA star Paul Pierce and Spanish footballer Gerard Pique.
Asia is well represented by the likes of Bryan Huang while World Gaming’s own David Steicke and Andrew W Scott are in good shape with well over 100,000 in chips each.
