Sands Macao celebrates 10 years

Written by Pai Yao

Macau reached a historic moment in its history last Friday night with Sands Macao celebrating 10 years since it first opened its doors on 18 May, 2004. As the first non-SJM property to open in Macau, the arrival of Sands Macao signalled the end of the Stanley Ho monopoly and paved the way for the sprawling and diverse landscape we see today.

The 10th anniversary celebrations featured an Anniversary Ceremony and Gala Dinner with CEO of the Macau SAR Fernando Chui Sai On, Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference Edmund Ho Hau Wah and Chairman and CEO of Las Vegas Sands Corporation Sheldon Adelson among those officiating at the Sands Theatre.

A highlight of the evening was the illumination of a special sand sculpture located outside the resort’s fountain area which was followed by a pyrotechnics display above Sands Macao. The sculpture was created by Team Sandtastic and is the only sand replica of a Sands building anywhere in the world.

Sands China Ltd CEO Mr Ed Tracey said, “Beyond celebrating 10 years since we opened our first property in Macau, we also celebrate the incredible pace of growth we’ve all seen over these past 10 years.

“Sands China has grown tremendously of course, but even more significant is the growth of Macau into a world centre of tourism and leisure. Our company will continue to leverage its integrated resort business model to help bring the best of the best to Macau, including the world’s biggest names in sports, film, music and more.”
