Scotsman Andy Murray has finally become a true contender. I thought Novak Djokovic would blow Murray away in the final, but the Scotsman fought until the bitter end and came away with his first Grand Slam victory.
During the last few months, Murray has made two Grand Slam finals and has also won an Olympic gold medal. What a turnaround from a man who was considered a good tennis player that didn’t have the guts to take the next step.
His success can be linked to his new coach Ivan Lendl who is as tough as they come. Lendl never had the class to match his contemporaries, but through dogmatic self-belief and a stubborn refusal to give up, he won a long list of Grand Slams. Lendl has injected strength into Murray’s game and has given him the edge he needs to win Grand Slams.
It looks like next year will be one of the most interesting years of tennis in the modern era. Will the great fire still burn in Federer’s belly? Will Nadal overcome the pain of his decaying knees and return to his former glory? Will Djokovic fight back to resume his dominance? Finally, can Murray continue to give the other three a run for their money? One thing is for sure – we can expect the tennis to be better than ever now the big three have become a big four.
