WGM’s Best Weekend Bets: Fri 17 to Sun 19 July 2015

Written by Ben Blaschke

After a successful two weeks with our Wimbledon tips, our eyes have now turned to this weekend’s round of Davis Cup quarter-final ties and the mouth-watering clash between Great Britain and France. The French will start as slight favorites with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gilles Simon and Richard Gasquet all strong singles contenders while doubles pairing Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert won at Queens last month.

However, we expect Britain’s main man Andy Murray to win both of his singles ties, meaning they only need to win one of their other three matches to advance. James Ward will be their other singles option and an upset in one of his singles rubbers can’t be discounted after a strong run to the third round at Wimbledon propelled him into the top 100 for the first time, while there is every chance Murray will partner with his brother Jamie in the doubles. Jamie reached the final of the men’s doubles at Wimbledon last week.

Saturday takes us to the Chinese Super League for the clash between Liaoning and Guangzhou Evergrande. Evergrande look very hard to beat in this one with an unbeaten run of 13 matches including eight wins. Liaoning have lost two of their past three and have just four wins from 19 games this season.

Sunday sees New Zealand’s Warriors travel to Sydney to take on the Roosters in what should be a thrilling clash between two of the NRL’s top four sides. Incredibly, the line has been set at a hefty 10.5 points with the Roosters favorites which seems way too generous to us. The home side’s strong defence may have leaked more than 14 points just once in their past nine matches but that one time was against this Warriors outfit in Round 14. Since then the Warriors have won three in a row and with halfback Shaun Johnson in stunning form it wouldn’t even surprise to see them come away with another win.
