Having finished a very respectable third at the World Cup in Brazil, tonight signals the dawn of a new era for the Dutch with returning manager Guus Hiddink taking over from Louis van Gaal and handed the task of qualifying for Euro 2016. First up – the Czech Republic!
That shouldn’t be a problem – even with the likes of Arjen Robben and Rafael van der Vaart out injured. The Dutch lost 2-0 in a friendly against Italy last week but that result came after having a player sent off within the first 10 minutes so we’re not too concerned about that.
More apparent is the gulf in class between the two sides and while the Czechs will try to stifle the Dutch attack they will find it difficult to contain them for the full 90. The Netherlands are also masters at this qualifying process and were the best performed of all the European sides before the recent World Cup with nine wins and a draw from their 10 qualifying matches.
