WGM’s weekend preview

Written by Ben Blaschke

Let’s start with some golf this week as we gear up for the popular AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. This annual event has carved out a unique niche on the calendar with both the world’s top golfers and a number of notable celebrities flocking to the course to take part. The event comprises both an individual event which is restricted to the pros and a teams event which sees each pro teamed with a celebrity. After two rounds, the top 25 teams will progress to Day 3 while the individual event carries on as normal.

Defending champion Brandt Snedeker looks to offer great value in the individual event at around $31 for a top five finish, while Jason Day is the bookies’ pick at $10. However, keep an eye on money list leader Jimmy Walker at $26 who has been in superb form so far in 2014.

A huge game looms in the EPL this week with Liverpool hosting Arsenal at Anfield. The Reds slipped up against West Brom mid-week and the pressure is on to keep hold of that valuable top four spot, while Arsenal has regained top spot on the ladder but need to keep winning to hold Manchester City and Chelsea at bay. Very little splits these teams here but we tend to lean towards the home side when in doubt and there is no doubt Liverpool has been difficult to stop on home soil of late, having thrashed Everton 4-0 in their last Anfield start.

And the Winter Olympics has arrived! With Friday’s Opening Ceremony sure to provide a spectacular welcome, the action officially gets underway on Saturday with the men’s slopestyle a must-see event as US legend Shaun White and Canada’s Mark McMorris fight it out for gold. Given McMorris is competing with a broken rib, we’re tipping White to add another gold to the tally. Also make sure you catch the men’s downhill skiing on Sunday as the best in the world reach speeds in excess of 140 km/h knowing the slightest error could see them risk catastrophic injury!

Good luck and good punting
