The Calendar Illustrations by Guan Huinong is a unique exhibition of his special works. Since childhood Huinong learned Western painting techniques passed down through his family, mastering composition of light and shadow as well as perspective. Later, he studied Chinese painting with Ju Lian, a Lingnan School grandmaster, eventually perfecting his skills in using brushstrokes and colours. Ju Lian’s unique “powder-and-water’ technique, a skill of adding water or powder to moist pigments on the paper for creating a blurring effect, greatly influenced Huinong, who later applied it to his calendar illustrations.
