Of all the prominent, powerful and personable people WGM has interviewed over the past seven years, few have lived as intriguing a life as Dr Rui Cunha.
Born in India before studying law in Portugal, he spent time working in Mozambique, Timor and Angola before moving to Macau in 1981 to work at STDM alongside Dr Stanley Ho. Having originally planned to stay for just one year, Dr Cunha is still in Macau 35 years later where he has become a highly influential figure – not only helping Dr Ho develop the region’s most important gaming organization but later setting up the Rui Cunha Foundation which aims to contribute to Macau’s legal and cultural identity.
You can read our in-depth and fascinating chat with Dr Cunha on page 14.
Speaking of culture, this issue we take a look at Macau’s unique Macanese community. Although only numbering around 10,000 people, the Macanese are an integral part of what makes Macau Macau with their Macanese Gastronomy and Patuá Theatre on the city’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
In sport, we meet a young man by the name of Ming Li who recently became the first player of Chinese heritage ever to be signed to an international cricket franchise, while our football expert Leanne Lu examines the stunning rise of Premier League minnows Leicester City this season.
And for those who like to dance the night away, our resident party animal The Stallion takes us to Asia’s hottest new nightspot – Pacha Macau at Studio City!
As always, follow the dragon,
