Bad start to 2016 as Las Vegas gaming revenues fall

Written by Ben Blaschke

Macau isn’t the only jurisdiction riding the gaming roller coaster right now with revenues across the US state of Nevada down by 2.87 percent to kick off 2016 — led by a 7.7 percent fall on the Las Vegas Strip.

Figures released by the Gaming Control Board late last week show gaming revenues of US$925.3 million state wide in January, down from US$952.7 in the same month last year.

The drop was primarily due to poor baccarat numbers on the Strip with the amount being wagered down 20.3 percent and baccarat revenue down 26.3 percent.

However, the fall has also been attributed to fewer major sporting events on the calendar this year than in January 2015, which tend to attract bigger crowds to Las Vegas.
