Big Jim’s weekend preview

Written by James Potter

September spells the end of winter and the start of spring in Australia, but more importantly, it heralds the start of the football finals for the two major Australian codes, the AFL and NRL. We get four great games in both codes, so put the beer on ice and kick back.

In the AFL, my advice is to take Collingwood, Sydney and Fremantle at the line, all of whom will get a head start from the bookies. I would also get behind the West Coast Eagles with the minus handicap against North Melbourne. It’s been a close season and I expect most of these games to be in the balance well into the fourth quarter.

In the rugby league get behind South Sydney who should come out firing when it matters. The Storm and the Bulldogs are going to find things tougher than they might have liked this September, and in the bottom half of the draw North Queensland look like they’ll do very well at home, so take them at the line.

The NFL kicks off with a mighty big bang, and since this sport is my forte, I hope to give you guys plenty of winners. A word of advice – don’t be fooled by preseason form. My picks of the week are Detroit, Chicago, Buffalo, Pittsburgh and Oakland. Take these five at the line and you should have a winning weekend.

Unfortunately, there will be no games in the EPL this weekend, but there are plenty of other sports to enjoy. The US Open finals at Flushing Meadows will be great viewing, and the baseball from the US is now in full swing. If that isn’t enough there is always golf where you can easily turn a small investment into a big payday.

Good luck and good punting.
