Big Jim's weekend preview

Written by James Potter

One of the big events for football fans this weekend will be Manchester United taking on the A League All Stars at ANZ Stadium in Sydney. I must say that I think exhibition games are a waste in time in general but when you talk about the biggest sporting club in the world bringing their product to the Asia Pacific region you have to admire it for what it is.

There will be 80,000+ fans packing in to see the Red Devils and it will be a great chance for the young players playing in the A League to strut their stuff. Who will win? Who really cares? It doesn’t mean anything but the legions of United fans will at least get to cheer on the likes of Robin van Persie and Ryan Giggs without having to travel to Old Trafford.

The British Open will give golf fans plenty of extended TV viewing this weekend. The great thing is that the Open is played at the most TV friendly time for us golf fanatics in the Asia Pacific. I will be cheering on the Tiger but look out for a strong European and Australian brigade who should relish the conditions compared to the hordes of Americans that don’t really excel in these conditions.

The Tour de France will end this weekend, the Second Test of the Ashes is on at the home of cricket at Lords and the Super 15 rugby finals will also get underway. There is also plenty of rugby league, baseball, Australian Rules and motor racing to keep every sports mad punter happy this weekend.

Good luck and good punting.
