Big Jim’s weekend preview

Written by James Potter

It’s the last weekend of the Super 15 regular season, and unfortunately the schedule appears to list a lot of clear-cut games. It would have been nice to have seen a few interesting matchups, but that’s just the luck of the draw I guess. Now is a good time to pick out who you think will win the competition and make a future bet. I am far from convinced about the three teams which sit on top. They will enjoy a great draw and home field advantage, but don’t be surprised if one of the wild card teams wins this year. Look for value and don’t bet on anything too short.

Since this is a quiet weekend on the sporting front, I’ll take the opportunity to talk to you about future betting. Betting on who is going to win a competition in the future is a unique skill. The most important thing to look for is good value. Unless you have a crystal ball it is hard to predict the outcome of a game – there can be big swings and roundabouts in any season, and teams go through highs and lows.

It might surprise you to know that the best time to bet on a team is when they have suffered a loss. Take Collingwood in the AFL, for example. They surprisingly lost to Carlton last weekend and drifted back in the premiership market. To be honest this loss has next to no bearing on their chances of winning the premiership. What it does mean is they are excellent value this week, but if they smash Geelong on the weekend their odds will shorten and you won’t get the good value you can get on them now.

Good luck and good punting.
