Big Jim's weekend wrap

Written by James Potter

Adam Scott will never get a better opportunity to win a golf major than the one he missed this weekend. This is not to say that he won’t ever win one – he’ll just always remember this one as the one that got away. Still, one man’s loss is another man’s gain, and this time the winner was South African nice guy Ernie Els.

The golfing world felt for Els as he was left out of the Masters field this year. Even though the former champion was playing decent enough golf there wasn’t room and golf is no place for sentiment. Els has answered that omission in the best way possible and this will be remembered as a great victory.

Bradley Wiggins became the first Brit ever to win the Tour de France this weekend. Not that we ever doubted him! The only opposition Wiggins ever faced were his own teammates, and most of that was just media hype. The event is over for another year, but you can be sure it will continue to grow from strength to strength.

In Australian sport Hawthorn and Canterbury celebrated big victories and deserve to be favorites in the AFL and NRL respectively. I still think these two teams are far from premiership certainties, and there is some juicy value to be had elsewhere. Again, look to back teams coming off a loss as the market tends to overreact. Collingwood and Melbourne Storm represent great value this week, and South Sydney are also starting to look like real premiership chances.

Good luck and good punting.
