Big Jim's weekend wrap

Written by James Potter

Tiger and Rory both missed the cut! What a nightmare for the event organisers. At least it happened in the desert where they can’t have been expecting many spectators anyway, and luckily for us, there was so much happening in the world of sport we could easily switch channels. Rory was just plain hopeless – he should have stayed in Melbourne and watched his girlfriend smash some tennis balls. Tiger missed the cut because he failed to consult an official about a ruling. If players such as Woods and Johnson pick up penalty shots for not knowing the rules in big tournaments, then the problem might be with the rules, not with the players who have done nothing except play golf since they were five.

The game is on in the EPL relegation battle. Reading won again this weekend and find themselves within a point of safety. It’s been an amazing couple of weeks for a club which looked certain to go down a month ago. This means that Aston Villa, Newcastle and Southampton are now right in the firing line, so it’s going to be a desperate struggle to see who can avoid the two spots up for grabs in the world’s worst sporting prize.

There weren’t so many surprises in the Australian Open tennis. The big names from the men’s draw were in cruise control and most of the seeded women have survived as well. The competition will start heating up this week as the pretenders begin their journey home.

The Brisbane Heat staged an incredible victory in the KFC T20 Big Bash League. They won a string of matches on the road to claim their first title. Hats off to Darren Lehmann and his slightly talentless team for going out there and playing the game in the right spirit. After all, I suppose T20 cricket is not a sport in which you should always back the favorites.

I will be doing a big Super Bowl special for all you lovers of the NFL, so we’ll leave the gridiron talk until then. The other big news was Dwight Howard’s horrible free throw shooting against the Heat. Are the Lakers kidding themselves? Kobe is playing great, but the rest of the team are pathetic!

Good luck and good punting.
