Big Jim’s weekend wrap

D.A. Points recorded a tough win on the PGA Tour in Houston, finishing 16-under after a final round 66 to score a narrow one shot victory. In an incredibly tight finish, 15 different players finished the tournament within five shots of the lead. But overshadowing Points’ win was the poor form of world number two Rory McIlroy who didn’t shoot a round under 70 throughout the tournament. He looked anything but a two-time major champion as he struggled to make birdies often had to fight to hold par. He now has 10 days to get things right before the US Masters and hopefully the hit-out has done him some good.

The Australian Rules football season kicked off in fine fashion with some close games and a few unexpected results. The Power, Giants, Suns and Bulldogs are all expected to struggle this year but three of these teams won and the Giants were at least competitive against last year’s premiers the Sydney Swans – even taking the lead at one stage late in the second quarter. It’s a long season but the AFL will be excited about the progress of both of their ”new” teams in the Giants and the Suns.

Some great rugby league action from the NRL over Easter kept us all glued to the television. The cream has risen to the top so far with South Sydney and the Melbourne Storm remaining the only two unbeaten sides in 2013. I consider these two to be the benchmark of the competition. The surprise packets have been the Gold Coast Titans (who I tipped as my best long shot to make the final eight). They have won three of their four games and under the inspirational leadership of Greg Bird are capable of putting a very good season together.

Southampton beating Chelsea was the major upset in the EPL while in other major news the amazing run of 27 consecutive wins by the mighty Miami Heat was finally extinguished by the Chicago Bulls. It was a huge Easter of sport so get off the couch, give the chocolate a rest for a while and we will be back for another huge weekend of sport next weekend.

Good luck and good punting.
