Big Jim's weekend wrap

Written by James Potter

Hats off to Wigan. What a performance to win the FA Cup final against the odds. To find out a little more about their incredible triumph, read my story aptly titled “fairytales do happen” posted here earlier today. The Premiership battle for the top four and bottom three resumed on Sunday in a telling day of football. Newcastle, Southampton and Norwich are now all safe and will line up again in the Premiership next year.

But after winning the FA Cup, Wigan now needs to beat Arsenal on Tuesday night at the Emirates to keep the relegation battle going into the last weekend of football. If this unlikely scenario plays out then Wigan will battle it out against Sunderland and Aston Villa to see who goes down. The problem is that Arsenal needs to win the game as well to claw back in front of Tottenham in the race for the final spot in the Champions League next season. Interesting times indeed!

We are down to just eight teams in the race for the NBA Championship. All four match-ups are currently in the balance with all of eight teams recording at least one victory already. Having said that, the Heat won’t lose to Chicago and the Spurs will be hard to beat despite the Warriors squaring their series at 2-2 this morning. The other two series are on a knife’s edge with the Thunder and the Knicks trailing the Grizzlies and Pacers respectively. These last two series look to be headed to six or seven games. My advice is not to write off the Thunder and to keep backing the Heat every time they go out on court.

I haven’t spent a lot of time watching the Super 15s this year. It probably has something to do with my sheer frustration at the running of the game (on every level) but I still love my rugby when it’s played well. There were some great, high scoring games last weekend that were decided on tries rather than a barrage of penalty kicks. The Brumbies, Reds, Bulls and Chiefs look pretty much assured of finals spots already, leaving only two wild cards remaining. The Blues have the front running for one of those but are being chased down by fast finishing efforts from the Crusaders, Waratahs and Cheetahs. I would love to see the Waratahs and the Cheetahs scrape through but I fear they will probably fall just short of the two teams from New Zealand. The Cheetahs will rue their loss at home to the Hurricanes last weekend when they had a chance to stamp their authority on the competition.

Tiger, Tiger, Tiger!!! The man is the greatest. His win in the Players Championship this morning makes it four titles for the year. Can he add that elusive Major later in the year? What a stupid question… of course he can!

Good luck and good punting.
