Big Jim's weekend wrap

Written by James Potter

It was a fitting all Spanish final at Roland Garros overnight. While Novak Djokovic played a great tournament including an epic semi-final against his old rival Rafael Nadal, no one could take away anything from Nadal or David Ferrer. There wouldn’t be a better clay court player in the world who has never won a French Open than Rafa’s compatriot. What can I say about Nadal that hasn’t been said before? Superlatives don’t really do him justice but he is the one sporting hero that I would actually enjoy seeing retire because his heart overcomes the torment that he puts his body through. When it comes to self-belief and mental toughness he stands at the very top of the mountain.

Well, sometimes too good is just too good. Tony Parker’s buzzer defying shot in the last second of Game 1 of the NBA Championship was about as good as you are ever going to see. LeBron was there in great coverage but it wasn’t enough and somehow it found the net. Both the Spurs and the Heat were horrible from the field but the defence and intensity of the contest was great. What a series we have in front of us now.

Scotland stunned the football world with an improbable 1-0 win over Croatia in Croatia. Liechtenstein also drew with Slovakia and Sweden lost on the road in Austria. The rest of the results didn’t throw up any surprises but there will be plenty of tears before this World Cup qualifying is done and dusted and there will be a couple of big name teams kicking back at home instead of boarding the plane to Rio in 2014.

Hope you backed a winner.
