British EU vote breaks betting record

Written by Ben Blaschke

Britain’s upcoming vote on whether to remain in the European Union or go it alone has become the biggest political betting event in British history.

As reported in The Guardian, around £40.5 million has been gambled so far on the outcome of tomorrow’s EU referendum – placing it ahead of the 2014 Scottish independence referendum as Great Britain’s most bet upon event.

Experts are also predicting a last-minute plunge that could push the total over £50 million.

The current amount includes some incredible firsts, with one woman from London placing her first bet ever of £100,000 on Britain voting to stay. She will make £40,000 if she wins.

The “stay” vote has shortened this week with William Hill slashing their odds from 4/11 to 1/3 to 2/7. They said that 66 percent of all money staked so far was on the “stay” option.
