Duterte admits Trump admiration but still favors China

Written by Ben Blaschke

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has admitted to a warmer view of the United States in the wake of Donald Trump’s shock election victory, but insists the country’s shift towards China would continue as planned.

“I will pursue what I’ve started,” Duterte said when asked what impact Trump’s leadership would have on relations between the two. “My partnership with China and the rest of Asean will remain. I am not in the habit of reneging on my word.”

Duterte has made no secret of his wish for the Philippines to foster a closer relationship with China at the expense of US cooperation, including ending joint military operations with the West.

However, he does appear to be a fan of Trump’s claiming their relationship would be, “anchored on mutual respect, mutual benefit and shared commitment to democratic ideals and the rule of law.”

“He is now President of the most powerful country in the world,” Duterte added. “What we share in common is the passion to serve.”
