The Macau SAR Government has made no secret of its desire to bolster the city’s non-gaming offerings in the coming years and when it comes to tourist attractions there is no bigger time of year in Macau than these autumn months.
As has been the case for the past 27 years, the night skies will light up throughout September as the world’s very best fireworks specialists converge for the spectacular Macau International Fireworks Display Contest.
But when it comes to taking Macau to the world, there is nothing bigger than the Macau Grand Prix. Since its humble origins back in 1954, the Macau Grand Prix has grown into one of the world’s most prestigious motor racing events and an important breeding ground for some of the best young drivers rising through the ranks. Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel, David Coulthard, Mika Häkkinen, Nico Rosberg and Jenson Button are just a few of the big names to have raced on Macau’s Guia Circuit before making their mark in Formula 1.
In this issue of WGM we take a special look at the history of Macau Grand Prix, from the unlikely set of circumstances that led to its birth through its key players and significant moments in its evolution. Macau Grand Prix Committee Co-ordinator Joao Manuel Costa Antunes tells us what’s new in 2015 as well as providing a fascinating statistical insight into just how big the race has become.
Continuing the grand prix theme, we catch up with veteran Hong Kong racing driver Marchy Lee to discuss his incredible career and why he believes Macau’s Guia Circuit is the toughest racing track in the world!
