Facebook thief steals woman’s Melbourne Cup winnings!

Written by Ben Blaschke

We’ve all been warned about the dangers of social media, but one lady discovered a whole new reason to be careful last week after a photo of her winning Melbourne Cup ticket was used to steal almost AU$1,000.

Western Australian woman Chantelle successfully backed 101-1 shot Prince of Penzance while watching from Ascot racecourse in Perth and posted a selfie of herself with the winning AU$825 ticket. But when she went to collect her prize 15 minutes later, Chantelle was told the money had already been collected – by someone on the other side of the country!

It is believed that one of Chantelle’s Facebook “friends” managed to scan the barcode at a TAB outlet in order to steal the money, however the good news is that police are on the case and confident of identifying the thief.
