Once again we’ve got another jam-packed issue of WGM for you all. Congratulations to Mervin Chan from Malaysia – the first Asian player to ever win the Aussie Millions, Asia’s premier poker tournament. As we’ve written about many times before in WGM, poker has boomed in Asia and it was no surprise to see someone from our part of the world take out the Aussie Millions Main Event, one of the most prestigious poker tournaments on the planet. Chan pocketed a tidy AU$1.6 million for his efforts, with a car thrown in for good measure. A special mention also goes out to Jay Tan, Celina Lin and Ken Wong, three more Macau regulars who all ran very deep in the tourney. Hopefully another Asian can take out the WSOP APAC at Crown Melbourne in April.
In celebration of the big win and also as an acknowledgment of poker’s rising popularity in Asia, this issue of WGM is the first ever with a cover that features poker. “How to win a poker tournament” takes you through the combination of art and science that is the journey from sitting down at a starting stack to taking out the final heads-up battle.
This issue also marks the beginning of our regular “Blast from the Past” feature. From now on, each issue of WGM will re-visit an article we published years ago, with our up-to-date commentary on it. It’s nice to have been around long enough to do that!
What else have we got? On the gaming front we continue last issue’s cover feature “Rise of the Machines” with part B, we talk about doubling down in blackjack, automatic shuffling mahjong tables, and introduce what is claimed to be the world’s most played card game – bridge.
In sport, Leanne Lu examines Swansea’s meteoric rise from nowhere to the English top flight, Christian Newbold gives his take on Lance Armstrong’s Oprah confession, we have Li Na, and Big Jim gives you his usual sports betting tip.
Of course we have our usual lifestyle articles: the Panda goes Indian, the Stallion goes Irish and the Phoenix goes diving! Our WGM Model Search continues with three more beautiful girls, as it will for every issue this year.
Don’t forget to visit wgm8.com to get your WGM fix while you’re waiting for our May/Jun issue to hit the streets. See you then!
