Good Food Guide: Café Kiu Kei

Written by The Panda

Café Kiu Kei is popular with locals, but seldom tourists. You’ll find it in a tiny courtyard behind St Francis Xavier church in Coloane Village. You must try the butter toast. No Hong Kong style restaurant can serve this kind of thick butter toast for this price! The surface of the toast was full of butter. When served, some clumps of soft butter had yet to melt into the glowing toast. To drink, order the milk tea. It is made following the traditional method – spoon sugar into the tea pot, pour in a cup of milk, use the spoon to stir the sugar, tea and milk together and pour through a tea strainer. This will treat you to one and a half cups of delicious self-made milk tea.

As a main dish, settle in to the highly recommended sirloin macaroni with omelette and tomato soup. The egg in the omelette is soft, giving a smooth texture, and their famous curry sirloin with tomato soup unexpectedly stimulates the appetite. Note that they close for four continuous but irregular days each month, notified by a sign on the door.
