Grant Bowie announces MGM Cotai as “mass only” property

Written by Ben Blaschke

MGM China CEO Grant Bowie has announced that the company’s new Macau property, MGM Cotai, will be mass market only when it opens next year.

“We’ve already made the decision that we’re envisaging opening with only mass tables and that’s obviously the basis of where we see the future of Macau,” Bowie said this week.

“That’s the decision we’ve taken at this time and we’re going to walk forward as being a mass-only property.”

The decision by MGM echoes the similar stance taken by Melco-Crown when Studio City first opened last year.

MGM Cotai was originally scheduled to open in late 2016 but the company recently announced it had been pushed back to the second quarter of 2017 as MGM China continues to adapt its final product.

“MGM Cotai as we’ve previously discussed as being built to cater for up to 500 tables, but clearly as we now see the market is changing and we have to adapt to the changes and that’s what we’re seeking to do in collaboration with the government,” Bowie said. “I’m very positive that our property in Cotai will be given sufficient products, sufficient tables to cater to the customers we need and we’re going to be successful.”
