Inherited Memories

Written by Yuci Tai

With the rapid development of society and technology, the number of old shops is declining and many handmade craft industries are unsustainable. Aware of this, the Macau Government started collecting old historic items back in 2011 to enrich the existing museum collections and support local historical research. Due to Macau’s traditional businesses and public donations, so far they have collected a total of 1,437 items with considerable historical value. Now we have a chance to see the historical traces of old Macau from these old compositions.

The Inherited Memories: Exhibition of Valuable Memorabilia is running from 1 July to 31 August, and showcases old cameras, hand-colored old photos, hand-carved Mahjong tools, traditional Chinese wedding dresses and items, embroidery and Chinese cake tools; and other precious artifacts. There are a total of four exhibition sites and each site features a different industry. They also each boast a stamp area – gather two or more stamps of the exhibition and you will receive a beautifully nostalgic souvenir.

The four industries are the Chinese Wedding Gown Industry at IACM Building from 09:00 to 21:00 daily, the Old-style Photography Studio Industry at S Lourenço Library from 08:00 to 20:00 (closed Mondays and public holidays), the hand-carved Mahjong industry at Wong Ieng Kuan Library in Taipa from 08:00 to 20:00 (closed Mondays and public holidays), and the Pastry Industry at Wong Ieng Kuan Library in Dr Sun Yat-Sen Municipal Park from 08:00 to 20:00 (closed Mondays and public holidays).
